Terms & Conditions - Climate Generation Program

Registration is open until April 2, 2012, and project reports must be submitted by April 2, 2012. The competition is open to any group of high school-aged students (grades 9-12) who are permanent residents of California. Employees of the California Air Resources Board, families, agents and anyone professionally associated with this promotion are not allowed to enter.

Applicants must be the ones who create the work submitted and who complete the registration form. Closing date for registration is April 2, 2012 and registration is required for your project report to be considered. Project reports are due April 2, 2012.

Project reports must be submitted to the California Air Resources Board via the CoolCalifornia.org website (see http://coolcalifornia.org/climate-generation for information on how to register and submit your application).

Incomplete, illegible or altered entries, or those not in accordance with the project report instructions or guidelines, are invalid. Any entries exceeding the word or time limit (separate from the entry form) will not be considered in the judging process.

All entries are subject to verification. Entries become the property of the California Air Resources Board and cannot be returned. Please ensure you keep a copy for yourself.

Guidelines

a) The report must be original.

b) The report must be about climate change issues impacting California, and must address one or more of the following topics:

• Energy Conservation;
• Renewable Energy;
• Water Conservation;
• Transportation;
• School Operations (e.g., purchasing, facilities, landscaping, waste reduction/recycling etc.); or
• Awareness/Communication.

c) The report can take the form of one or more of the following:

• A written report (no longer than 3,000 words or 10 pages including photographs and
attachments);
• A webpage (could include multimedia elements);
• A video (not to exceed 20 minutes);
• An audio report (not to exceed 20 minutes); or
• A podcast (not to exceed 20 minutes).

d) Entries will be considered invalid and will not be considered if they are:

i. Copyrighted, protected by trade secret or otherwise subject to third party proprietary rights, including privacy and publicity rights, unless you are the owner of such rights or have permission from their rightful owner to submit the material to this competition in full compliance with these Terms;
ii. False, inaccurate, misleading, unlawful, obscene, defamatory, libellous, threatening, pornographic, harassing, hateful, racially, ethnically or otherwise offensive, or encourages conduct that would be considered a criminal offense, give rise to civil liability, violate any law, or is otherwise inappropriate, as may be determined by the program sponsors, or contrary to the program’s other stated policies and procedures, where applicable.

e) Entries will become the property of the California Climate Generation Program and will not be returned. The California Air Resources Board may publish entries (including photos and videos) to promote the competition and/or program.

f) The report must be submitted together with a fully completed registration form with information including the name and contact details for the main point of contact for the project, including a mailing address, email address and phone number.

g) The report package may also include a completed Climate Champion nomination form for a student whose contribution to the Climate Generation project was particularly significant. The nominator should explain why s/he believes the nominated student should be selected as a Climate Champion. The nomination should be no longer than 200 words.

h) The winning project(s) will be the most innovative, most well-designed and best-executed projects, as evaluated by the review panel.

Judging and Selection

a) Once the competition closes on April 2, 2012, valid project reports will be sorted and judged by a panel. The panel of judges will include at least one member who is independent of the California Air Resources Board.

b) The panel will select the best entry(ies) as the California Climate Generation program winner(s). Winners will be chosen at the discretion of the judging panel, whose decision is final. No correspondence with applicants will be entered into prior to this selection.

c) Applicants selected as California Climate Generation winners will be notified on or before May 4, 2012.

d) Climate Champions who are selected from the submitted nominations will also be selected by the review panel and will also be notified on or before May 4, 2012.

e) Notification of winners will occur by telephone or email; a representative of the California Air Resources Board will contact the point of contact specified on the application at the telephone number(s) or email address(es) provided on the application form.

f) The Climate Generation winner(s) and a list of California Climate Champions, along with a summary of the winning project reports, will be available on the program website after winners and Climate Champions are notified.

Details

  1. California Climate Champions will be expected to participate in various events throughout 2012 and longer if they wish to remain involved. This may include meetings with government representatives to discuss climate change, engaging peers in communicating about climate change and speaking to members of the media about the Climate Generation and Climate Champions programs as well as about climate change awareness.
  2. Other internships, scholarships, events and/or activities may be made available to Climate Champions throughout the upcoming year.

General Conditions

  1. Responsibility cannot be accepted for entries that are incomplete, delivered incorrectly, damaged or those not received for whatever reason. Proof of mailing is not proof of receipt.
  2. By signing the application form the applicants agree to allow their applications to be used for promotional purposes, to be contacted for follow-up if necessary and to accept and abide by the rules.
  3. The Air Resources Board reserves the right to offer an alternative prize if necessary.
