2011 Climate Generation Winners

Announcing the 2011 Climate Generation Winners
The project review committee was very pleased with the winning Climate Generation submissions, although it was really tough to rank these great projects relative to each other. Below are very brief descriptions of what the 3 winning student groups did.
1. Menlo-Atherton High School's "Behavior Change or Climate Change" project
These students developed a curriculum that promotes climate-friendly behaviors in everyday life, and the older students teach the curriculum to the younger students at the high school. They include funny videos and hands-on activities, like a clothes line relay.
Award: $2000 and a recognition event to honor the students in person
2. Arroyo High School's "From Garbage to Garden" project
These students built compost bins at school, collected organic waste from local businesses and households, and used the compost to fertilize a school garden. It's very well-documented in a video they created and their monitoring of the compost was analytical and thorough!
Award: $1500
3. Ukiah High School's project to "Reduce Use of Single-use Bags in Ukiah"
These students engaged local businesses in a BYOBag raffle event where shoppers who used their own bags were given a ticket which entered them in a raffle to win a cool prize at a fun local event. The students subsequently worked with their City Council and others in the community to successfully pass an ordinance to ban plastic bags in Ukiah and to require a fee for paper bags.
Award: $500
Congratulations to all of the 2011 Climate Generation winners!
We look forward to seeing this program inspire more students to take on great projects like these in the future. Check back for details about the 2012 program.
